Community leaders, healthcare partners, elected officials, faculty, staff, students and supporters all gathered at Sampson Community College this morning, July 1, for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Health Sciences building.
Purposefully designed for healthcare education, this state-of-the-art facility will serve future SCC students for years to come. The project stands as a direct reflection of SCC’s mission to provide accessible, affordable education and workforce training through innovative, effective teaching.
Sampson Community College's new Health Sciences Building will be a 36,048-square-foot, two-story facility purpose-built to expand healthcare education and workforce training for the region. The building will house and support programs including Nursing, Nurse Aide, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, Surgical Technology, Pharmacy Technology and Emergency Medical Services (EMS)/Paramedic.
“Rural community colleges don't see this type of investment very often, and so we're really excited about our ability to be able to provide this type of facility not only for our nursing programs, but for their other health programs and health programs that might come in the future,” shared Sampson Community College President Dr. Bill Starling. “It's a significant investment, I think it'll last for a century, perhaps, or longer. Our heartfelt thanks to the General Assembly, to Senator Jackson, Representative Brisson [and] to our commissioners who agreed to support this into the future. A momentous day for Sampson Community College.”
The new Health Sciences Building is designed to increase Sampson Community College's capacity to educate highly skilled healthcare professionals while helping meet the growing workforce needs of Sampson County and the surrounding region.
Construction is expected to take 15 to 18 months. The facility will feature specialized instructional and simulation labs designed to replicate real-world healthcare settings, including an emergency room, an EMS lab with ambulance access, a medical office, a residential care environment and other hands-on learning spaces. In addition to advanced labs, the building will include classrooms, faculty offices, conference space, student gathering areas and support spaces.
