The 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum has served the Fort Liberty community since 1945 working to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the history of the Division from 1917 to the present.
Located at 5108 Ardennes St on Fort Liberty, the Museum facility includes an exhibit gallery, theater and archive and the Airborne Park spread across a seven acre site.
The Museum is working to expand their building and is continuing their 18 year expansion fundraiser titled ”The Next Century begins”.
The expansion plans will add an additional 5,650 sq. feet and allow the museum to have a more dramatic entrance to attract visitors.
“The new entrance will allow us to greet groups and orientate them to the division’s experience. The new entrance will complement the new exhibit gallery. The new space will allow us host special exhibits and expand the gallery as the division continues to add to its history,” said Museum Director John Aarsen.
Aarsen shared this is a collaborative project that has been in development with the 82d Airborne Division, Installation and 82d Airborne Division Historical Society since 2005 and has been part of all 5-year development plans since then.
“We have incorporated this in other projects such as the fire suppression system installed in 2006, sized to support a 25,000 square foot addition. The expansion was also considered when planning the Hall of Heroes addition on the museum grounds,” said Aarsen.
The 82d Airborne Division War Memorial Museum is the second oldest U.S. Army museum and still resides in the same location.
